Gragas
Master Tier Champion Guide
Identity/Why You Should Play Gragas
Gragas is a versatile AP bruiser who excels at disrupting enemy teams and creating opportunities for his allies. His unique combination of crowd control, burst damage, and surprising tankiness allows him to adapt to various team compositions and fill multiple roles effectively. Gragas is a great choice for players who enjoy making flashy plays, controlling the battlefield, and being a constant nuisance to the enemy team.
Strengths & Weaknesses
Strengths
Built-in Good Sustain: Thanks to his passive, Happy Hour.
Excellent Scaling: Scales extremely well with Ability Power (AP).
High Utility in Fights: Good teamfighter, capable of providing strong peel and "Bomba-ing" the enemy carry out of a fight.
Weaknesses
Low Early Damage/High Cooldowns: Gragas is one of the weakest champions at early levels.
Useless if Behind: Gragas is described as useless if he falls behind early.
Predictable Engage/Ultimate: His engage is very predictable, and his ultimate (Explosive Cask) has a very long travel time, making his combo easily dodged by tenacity or escape tools.
Laning Phase
Gragas is one of the weakest champions during the early levels due to low damage, high mana costs, and very high cooldowns.
Mana Management
Avoid poking too much with Barrel Roll (Q) early, as it costs 80 mana and can quickly drain your resources. Only use Q to poke if you can simultaneously last-hit a minion. Once you have more points in Q and more mana, it becomes fine to use it for farming and poking.
Pressure and Pushing
Once you are strong enough (usually after your first recall or Level 6), you should push as much as possible to assert pressure on your side of the map.
Safety and Aggression
If you get ganked, you can often run away or outplay it using Phase Rush. After gaining points in Q, you can start fighting and playing aggressively. New players should "limit test as much as possible" to learn the champion and attract enemies.
Sustain and Farming
During the early game, farm primarily with Drunken Rage (W). W increases your attack range, gives you damage reduction, and procs your passive (Happy Hour) for very cheap.
Teleport (TP) Usage
If your wave is slow-pushing away from you, you should almost always TP back to lane to prevent losing significant experience.
If the enemy wave is slow-pushing toward you, you should not TP because the wave will automatically come to you, allowing you to catch most of the XP by just walking.
Generally, try to keep TP available to help your team win early fights, as this can be game-changing.
Team Fighting & Macro
After the laning phase (usually around 15 minutes, depending on the game state), Gragas excels at teamfighting and grouping up.
Vision Control
Vision Control
When the laning phase ends, always pick up an Oracle Lens and buy Control Wards whenever possible. Engaging when enemies lack vision is 10 times easier and more effective.
Engagement
Engagement
Try to catch an opponent with a fast Body Slam (E) + Explosive Cask (R) + Flash combo.
Split Pushing
Other than grouping, you should try to split push in the sidelane. The optimal sidelane is the one mirroring the next upcoming objective (
E.g., if Dragon is spawning in 1 minute, split top to pressure that side). If a fight breaks out, you should TP to that fight.
Runes
Phase Rush (Always Best / Standard Top)
This is the recommended setup for Gragas Top, described as generally easier to play and more rewarding. Primary Tree: Sorcery (Phase Rush, Manaflow Band, Transcendence, Gathering Storm). Secondary Tree: Precision (Cut Down, Legend: Haste).
Grasp of the Undying (Alternative)
This page provides a more tanky approach using the Resolve tree. Primary Tree: Resolve (Grasp of the Undying, Demolish, Second Wind, Overgrowth). Secondary Tree: Sorcery (Manaflow Band, Scorch).

Tips & Tricks
Abilities
EYou can combo Body Slam (E) + Flash to instantly extend the range of your
E and surprise the opponent.
WYou can auto-attack the enemy and immediately use Body Slam (E) during the Drunken Rage (W) attack animation. This cancels the remaining W animation, allowing you to deal damage faster.
QYou can cast Barrel Roll (Q) and Explosive Cask (R) during your Body Slam (E). This gives your opponents less time to react to the subsequent abilities.
GeneralWhen attempting to kill someone, ensure you use Flash during the combo so the enemy cannot react and dodge the incoming abilities.
You should max Q 95% of the time.
